The interiors of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese off Fleet Street were perfect so we left them well alone. Conservation is often about knowing when to do nothing.

 

Outside the famous pilastered front in Wine Office Court had been altered and the mechanism of its one remaining counter-weighted external shutter had seized up long ago.

 

Using archive photographs and the surviving fabric we restored them back to working order and a form recognisable to Oscar Wilde, Dickens, T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats and all the other literary giants for whom this was a favourite haunt.
